Kirkhirst Plantation stands on the left hand side of the A709 Lockerbie to Lochmaben road, to the East of Castle Loch. NGR: NY 096 813.

This mixed woodland consists of two compartments; 1.2 acres being Norway Spruce, on the south east of the plantation, which is nearing maturity. The remainder is an intimate mix of broadleaf species, including birch and willow, with a coop of poplar and occasional oaks and beech. Enrichment planting has been undertaken over the years, with numerous young tubed trees within the mosaic. The variation in tree species and growth stages results in a varied and non-uniform woodland, able to supply a good annual harvest of firewood from thinnings.

The woodland is well fenced and drained, with the benefit of a good access track and timber stacking areas.

Kirkhirst Plantation is located to the East of the Castle Loch Nature Reserve. The reserve hosts a variety of wildlife including many migratory waterfowl, birds of prey and a number of mammals including otters, roe deer and red squirrels. The woodland provides an extension to this excellent mosaic of habitats, providing a nesting opportunity for many native small woodland birds, owls and other birds of prey.
